Friday Pattern Company – Adrienne Blouse

I loved the design of the Adrienne Blouse from Friday Pattern Company from the second I saw it. It has statement sleeves, a fitted bodice and is a quick and easy sew – what’s not to love?

I held off buying it because it was rather a pricey pattern and I have a vague rule in my head about not spending more than 6€ on a pattern unless I have drooled over it continuously for several months – by which point a glass of wine or two eventually convinces me to pull the trigger. I finally bought this pattern during the Black Friday sale and all I can say is –  why did I wait so long? I’ve made two tops so far and have another 10000 in planning.

I made this version in some bamboo lycra I picked up from Cape Castle Fabrics in Northern Ireland. It is spectacular – the print is called ‘Starry Potter’ and the design is a play on Van Gough’s Starry Night painting and Harry Potter (it even has dementors on it!) The fabric is vibrant and feels amazing. The only thing is it has a little more stretch in it than a viscose jersey or cotton jersey, so I should have sized down the neck band accordingly – it’s not a big enough issue for me to worry about though! The real issue is why did I only buy 1m of this fabric?!?

DSCF9031It takes around 1.5 hours to put this top together from cutting to finish. I could probably do it faster but I have been working on making the inside of my pieces look as nice as the outside so I’ve been slowing down and doing things properly – I still think 1.5 hours is super quick for a new top though!  The pattern is made up of the bodice piece, sleeve piece and neckband piece and comes with a great tutorial to make a quick FBA which has come in handy! I had to adjust the elastic recommendations a little as the length of elastic the pattern calls for meant the top slid off my shoulders  – easy to shorten that though. I also didn’t shorten the top for my height (Friday Pattern Co. designs for around 5’5 and the Adrienne Blouse is designed to be cropped length) so that I could wear it with non-high waisted pants and skirts.

DSCF9051I really like the look of this top. It looks great with pants, skirts and under pinafore dresses. It’s a quick and gratifying sew and bonus: 3/4 sleeve means there’s no risk of accidentally dipping your sleeve in your coffee or lunch – wins all round!
